Blog Name Ideas: Tips for Choosing the Right Name for Your Blog

What is the biggest obstacle facing every budding blogger?

1. Trying to choose a name for your blog.

Naming a blog can be quite difficult, especially if you are new to the whole blogging and branding thing. And if you're just like me, you can spend hours brainstorming for names, only to end up with a list of crappy ones.

Surely there is a better way?

Well, I'm glad you asked! If you are the type who really hates making names or is just plain terrible at it, then I have come up with some tips and tricks to help you create and choose the right name for your blog.

How to pick the right name for your blog

Tip # 1: Understand how your name represents your brand and blog
Before churning out the masterpieces of blog names, it is important to take a moment and understand what your blog and brand name are meant to represent.

Ask yourself these four questions:

  • What will your blog be about?
  • Who will be the target audience?
  • What kind of tone would it be (accidental, serious, etc.)?
  • How will a blog name build your brand?
The name of your blog should be related to the type of content you are creating. Imagine a blog called "The Foodie's Corner", but your content is about a review of natural hair products for men, you will end up confusing readers who were expecting a food blog.

Likewise, if you have a corporate / cool name but write in a casual / fun tone, it gives the reader the wrong impression and they wonder if they should take you seriously.

Be consistent with your brand and what it represents!

If you want to start a food blog, you should use words related to food or eating (ie snacking, vegetarian, healthy, chomping, etc.).

If your blog is about digital marketing techniques, use keywords related to those industries or use industry-specific terms (ie SEO, digital marketing, SEM, etc.).

Tip # 2: Have a thesaurus ready and get creative!
At this point, you need to find out which words would best describe your blog. Now comes the fun part! Pick up a thesaurus, or head over to thesaurus.com, and see similar words that can be used for your blog name.

Suppose you are creating a food blog. You can decide that the bulk of your content will be about the following keywords: food, healthy food, vegetarian, exercise, happy, cuisine, and nutrition.

Plug those words into thesaurus.com and you will find words like snack, grub, fresh, fit, happiness, gifts, diet, munchies, strong, hearty, veggies, and bliss. Add a few of those words together (like vegan munchies or fit recipes) and voila, you got a name for your blog.

When you are trying to think of words to name your blog, you can always use the thesaurus for a quick list of words to use.

Tip # 3: Use names, verbs, or even descriptive words related to you and your content
You may decide that using a thesaurus is enough, but if you really want to take your naming game to the next level, start adding nouns, verbs and / or descriptive words.

Adding nouns, verbs, and descriptive words can further customize your blog name, which makes it unique. Furthermore, it helps to avoid overlapping with other sites or blogs similar to your site.

With the food blog example, you can add nouns or descriptive words that refer back to you as a blogger, which can be: boss, boy, girl, beginner, food, advice, breakfast, dinner, lunch Food, clubs etc.

Put them together and you will find gems like fit girl food, vegetarian boss munchies, fresh kitchen recipes, or healthy diet clubs.

You can also take this one more step and add verb tense or word variations to make it even more unique. Some examples would be: fit girl recipes, vegetarian meals, delightful bakers, rotating on fit and fresh.

Pro Level Tip: Using Made-up Word or Searching Your Words
For those who are creatively inclined, you can try to invent or create entirely new words to name on your blog.

This requires a bit of out-of-the-box thinking but can be a great way to add fun to your blog name. Some great examples would be Snackzilla, Veganized, Sizzlerella, Helmsi.

Don't be afraid to experiment with all types of words and have fun with it. You may end up with a good name that no one has ever thought of!

Tip # 4: When All Others Fail, Use Blog Name / Word Generator
Maybe you've tried all the tips above and you still can't come up with a really good name.

I am. No worries! Try using the name / word generator for some great suggestions.

Sites like Wordroid.com are a great tool for coming up with fun word combinations and it's really easy to do. Just enter a word related to your content, click on the "wordoids" button, and it will give you a list of names you can use.

What's great about WordRoids is that you can set limits in your words, define the quality of words, set patterns, and even include domain name availability. This means that you can check whether or not the name you registered on .com took the stress of crafting a terrible one and that it was taken.
